Both my Savages do the same.
Both 1996 models - first one has to run on PRI all the time (I'm fixing that at the moment)
Second one just started having problems - put it on PRI for two to five miles, turn it back to normal and no more problem. After getting to where you are going, if it's more than maybe 20 minutes, I have to do the same thing again. Until I figured out to put it on PRI, I damn near got run over a few times. Now I start off with it every time.
